trial in a burmese prison

Myanmar's military junta arrested 18 foreign democracy activists in August 1998 for passing out pro-democracy leaflets in Yangon. This picture was taken surreptitiously during their subsequent trial at the notorious Insein Prison, where a handful of local journalists were allowed to attend. Some diplomats (far left) were also allowed to observe.

After a day-long trial, the activists (right, in plastic chairs) were found guilty and sentenced to five years' hard labor for inciting unrest. Following an appeal by one, the judge suspended the sentence and ordered them deported.
