Expo Neuilly fev 2005
Almost 10 years ago I thought, "I might like to be a missionary." However, all I was allowed to do was tag along and observe when my dad went as the designated pharmacist during medical outreach. I was furious when I wasn't allowed to Myanmar or to Russia and disappointed when my visa failed to get passed in time for Serbia. On top of all that, I've always wanted to go to Mongolia. It always seemed like I wasn't ready. The trip to Myanmar happened when I was 14 so I guess my parents thought I was too young. The trip to Russia was denied me because my dad was worried I might get bombed. The trip to Serbia was a no go because of slow paperwork and etc. However, approaching my third year, it seems that maybe God thinks I'm now ready. I went to and am going to Sebuyau twice in a fortnight and I met Sarguul last night during Alpha Course. She's a student at Inti College and guess what? She's from Mongolia. I've already 'buddied up' with her and we're going to meet up and paint the town red and I'm going to learn Mongolian (she taught me two words; camel and horse but I can't seem to pronounce the word for man) and get this, her grandparents are proper nomads! She'll be here for 3 or 4 years so that means after my degree when I come back, she'll still be here! I hope to do a masters so that'll give me time to continue meeting up with her. She's amazing on the piano and knows all the pieces I want to learn by heart so I really salute her for that. I only hope I don't scare her by being over eager but as we both leave Kuching on the 15th, we have unofficially planned that I could take a 2 week trip with her to Mongolia! How so extremely cool is that??!! I haven't told my parents yet and this all happened last night so it might not come to pass at all but the thought of it is wondrous and oooooooh. If I can't afford to or am not allowed to go or it doesn't come to pass, I hope to be able to stay back in Kuching a few more days to go to Ulu Skrang, which is a community of Ibans living in longhouses. Either way, I don't think I'll be back in London too soon. There's just so much to do and so many doors have been opened in terms of mission work and experience. For the fame of God.

Buu means Gourd in Burmese. Buu Paya implies Gourd-shape Pagoda.
The original Buu Paya was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1975. This one has been rebuilt.
We were taught at school that Buu Paya was built to commemorate the triumph by a hero called Pyu Saw Htee over wild plants of gourd. One part of Bagan had been completely covered with wild plants of gourd, which was considered very difficult to get rid of. Pyu Saw Htee, being a great warrior, managed to wipe out the entire area and reclaimed land for Bagan.

Opponents of Myanmar's military junta marked the 60th birthday of detained democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday with solemn protests across Asia, including a 500-strong gathering in the capital of the former Burma.

In Burmese they're called "nat kadaws" - women who have been chosen as brides by spirits known as nats. They "channel" the nats at all-night all-day ceremonies where they go into convulsive trances, forecast the future and give advice. It's so wild they have to have assistants to keep them from hurting themselves.

Gifts donated to a pagoda; hundreds of old statues, plaster trees, Buddhist paintings and mysterious artifacts, all mouldering away in the heart of a forgotten monastery known as "the maze." Yangon, Myanmar.
Right, Myanmar, Nigeria and Nauru are the worst moeny laundering countries in the world. Worse than the US? Gimme a break.

Nagas crawl the balustrades of pagodas all over Southeast Asia -- huge demi-gods who take the form of snakes. Some represent the bridge between the earthly and celestial worlds; others are there to scare off evil. One famous naga asked the Buddha if he could become a monk; but the Buddha refused, saying he should wait to be reincarnated as a human, first.

Myanmar's military junta arrested 18 foreign democracy activists in August 1998 for passing out pro-democracy leaflets in Yangon. This picture was taken surreptitiously during their subsequent trial at the notorious Insein Prison, where a handful of local journalists were allowed to attend. Some diplomats (far left) were also allowed to observe.
After a day-long trial, the activists (right, in plastic chairs) were found guilty and sentenced to five years' hard labor for inciting unrest. Following an appeal by one, the judge suspended the sentence and ordered them deported.

Always so interesting to me, how serious even the young children got about having their photo taken. No laughing matter, this, until they got to see it on the back of the camera. Sometimes, as a result of their seriousness, some powerful expressions found their way home with me. They always seem to look right through the camera and into my soul.

She was something, this big sister, all efficiency, pride, and self-confidence. Spoke a few barely understandable words of English, and seemed very intelligent, despite a lack of education. Her family was a poor one, living in Bagan off a small dirt track. When not working with her mother, I would see her trying to talk to the tourists here, learning words, always with this uncanny poise.
awfulsara posted a photo:
Like many a family here in Bagan, these kids live essentially at one of Bagan's thousands of amazing ancient temples. Their parents are caretakers and they pass the time meeting wanderers like me, who find their way to the smaller, more out of the way temples by foot or bicycle. They are so excited to see me coming, even more so when they see the camera, though its size intimidates at first.
As I sat on the stone, cleaning my always dusty equipment, they curiously gathered round, patient and respectful, smiling and friendly, though a bit shy.

While market shots are a bit cliche, it is where daily life is lived in spades, where the goings on go on all around you, where you can blend in as much as a tall white girl with blue eyes and a huge camera will ever blend in in Burma. ;)
Loved this neat little row of spices with the lovely curly Burmese script I had such trouble deciphering and the rich browns behind.

Yum.
Buying meat in a SE Asian market is something I think I shall avoid doing. All weighed out on the same scale, live fish, dried fish, chicken parts & legs, goat heads. I suppose they are disturbingly fresh (save for this stuff) but yikes. Enough to swing me back to vegetarianism some days. :)
